Raised nearly HK$109 Million for The Community Chest
Hong Kong is a small city with a big heart. Retaining a high level of commitment in community development, people of Hong Kong has given most generously to help the needy amidst them. Blessed with the staunch support from over 800 companies, organisations and government departments, The Community Chest’s Corporate & Employee Contribution Programme raised nearly $109 million in 2009/10 campaign year which accounted for an upsurge of 64 percent compared to the previous year.
In recognition of these outstanding organisations, a Cheque and Award Presentation Ceremony was held on 25 May. The Hon Charles Y K Lee, GBM, JP, 2009/2010 Campaign Committee Co-Chairman of the Chest; Mr Vernon Moore, BBS, Corporate & Employee Contribution Programme Chairman and Co-Chairmen also attended this event.
Bank of China (Hong Kong) has always been heavily involved in community investment. This year, the Bank generously designated HK$25 million to The Community Chest for social welfare enhancement and brought the Bank the “Magnificent Award”. Bank of China (Hong Kong) also encouraged staff’s participation in joining the CARE Scheme by matching the donations.
HSBC, another ardent supporter of the Chest did their utmost to contribute to the wellbeing of Hong Kong community. HSBC and its staff members raised a substantial amount of nearly HK$7 million, an impressive 18.6 percent increment compared to the previous year, won the Bank the Magnificent Award for the ninth consecutive year. In addition, they were crowned Top Fund-raiser Award in Employee Contribution Programme and Green Day, Love Teeth Day as well as Skip Lunch Day with their continued support for the Chest. Maxim’s Group and The Wharf (Holdings) Limited have also made great efforts in the Programme by donating HK$2 million to the Chest respectively, they were presented with the “Distinguished Awards”.
A total of HK$57.5 million was raised through the participation of 58 companies in the “Stock Code Balloting for Charity Scheme” initiated by Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited. Since its inception in 1999, the Scheme has drawn strength from 350 companies and channeled over HK$317.5 million back to Hong Kong community (as at 31 March 2010).
“Employee Contribution Programme” under the “Corporate & Employee Contribution Programme” has also been well-received among local organisations and government departments. This Campaign Year, more than 530 participating organisations raised over HK$13 million. The Top Three Donors of Employee Contribution Programme were HSBC, The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited and Citi respectively.
The Hong Kong and China Gas Company Limited worked closely with their staff in promoting the CARE Scheme through monthly payroll deduction and have been presented with The “Highest Donation Award” of the Scheme since its inception. Besides participating in the Chest’s events, organisations also initiated their own creative fund-raising campaigns. Citi was presented with the “Highest Donation Award” of Donation Drive for the 13th consecutive year. CLP Holdings Ltd. won the 2nd “Highest Donation Award” by matching their donations to the Chest with staff voluntary services hours and number of trees planted. The 3rd “Highest Donation Award” was presented to Wai Kee Holdings Limited.
Hong Kong Dental Association and Oral Health Education Unit of Department of Health again organised “Love Teeth Day” to help the Chest enhance “Oral Health Services” for the needy; MTR Corporation organises various fund-raising initiatives at MTR Shopping Centres every year; Wing on Cheong Securities Company Limited donated 10% of their net monthly commission to the Chest for 13 consecutive years. All these activities reflected the participating organisations’ firm commitment in making Hong Kong a better home for all.
The Hong Kong Jockey Club, our Partner in charity, generously supports The Community Chest in helping to subsidise our administrative costs, enabling 100% of the donations to be allocated to our 148 member social welfare agencies.

Teresa Au, Head of Corporate Sustainability Asia Pacific Region, The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited (right) received the Award from The Hon Charles Y K Lee, GBM, JP, 2009/10 Campaign Committee Co-Chairman of The Community Chest. In addition, HSBC employees also exhibited their firm belief in benevolence through keen participation in The Community Chest’s “Employee Contribution Programme” and was crowned the Top Fund Raiser title.
