The Community Chest Green Day
Encourages Public to “Ride Green & Go Green at Work”

The Community Chest Green Day will be held on 27 and 28 June (Sunday & Monday) 2010 consecutively. Themed “Ride Green & Go Green at Work”, the event appeals to the community to take greener form of transportation, reduce the carbon footprint at workplace and at home. Over 28,000 donors from nearly 330 companies, government departments and orgsanisations pitched in their contributions for this event. All funds raised through this year’s “Green Day” will be allocated to enhance the local “Medical and Health Services” supported by the Chest.

The Hon Edward Yau, JP, Secretary for the Environment officiated at the Ceremony. Also presiding at the Ceremony were Mr Ian F Wade, BBS, Chairman of Employee Contribution Group, Corporation and Employee Contribution Programme of the Chest; Ms Jeny Yeung, Convenor of Green Day Working Group and General Manager of Marketing and Station Commercial, MTR Corporation; Mr Robert Nien and Mr Ivan Wong, Committee members of Corporate and Employee Contribution Programme; Sponsor and Supporting Organisation representatives Ms Bianca Ma, Managing Director of Metro Broadcast Corporation Limited, and the Green Day twin ticket set designer from the Award-winning design house Postgal Workshop.

"The acceleration of global warming brought us unusual weather conditions and ecosystem damage across the world. This has also threatened the environment for human survival. The cause of these disasters is excessive carbon dioxide emission. Though these issues cannot be solved overnight, it’s time we take our actions and reduce carbon footprints." Ms Jeny Yeung, Convenor of Green Day Working Group pointed out.

This year, the Chest introduced a “Green Tips Competition” targeting at all participating organsiations. By sharing green tips with the general public, the Chest aims at raising awareness and understanding of environmental protection, energy saving and carbon dioxide reduction. Among the many participating Organsiations, Hong Kong Police Force Police Headquarters and Sham Shui Po District took away Champion and First Runner-up trophies for greening their working environment and opening up a roof-top farm – “Greenery” respectively; while Hallmark Cards (HK) Limited won the Second Runner-up title for introducing award system among staff members to encourage them to reduce carbon footprints at the workplace.

Upon its introduction in 2000, The Community Chest Green Day gained instant popularity. This year, by making a donation of HK$60 or more, participants will be presented with a set of exquisite Community Chest Green Day Twin Tickets to enjoy unlimited travel on the MTR, Light Rail, MTR Bus and MTR Feeder bus (except Airport Express, East Rail Line First Class, Lo Wu, Lok Ma Chau or Racecourse stations) on the event days.

The Chest expresses its sincere gratitude to MTR Corporation for offering participants two consecutive days of unlimited free rides for fund-raising purposes and Metro Broadcast Corporation Limited for their ardent support.  Special tribute is also extended to the international award winning design house - Postgal Workshop, for creating the lively illustrations for this event.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club, our Partner in charity, generously supports The Community Chest in helping to subsidise our administrative costs, enabling 100% of the donations to be allocated to our 148 member social welfare agencies.
