The Community Chest 2009/2010 Annual Presentation of Awards

The Community Chest Annual Presentation of Awards Ceremony, officiated by Mrs Selina Tsang, President of the Chest, was held on 21 June at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Benefitted from the recovering economy and the increasing support from all sectors of the community, The Community Chest managed to set a new record in its history by raising over HK$278 million and surpassed its initial target (HK$202 million) by 37.6 per cent. During the Ceremony, the Chest paid tribute to nearly 220 major donors, government departments and individuals who invested generously in community development.

Top Donor of the Year - the Bank of China (Hong Kong) has always been heavily involved in community investment. In addition to a significant amount of donations to the Chest, the Bank also encouraged staff participation in many of the Chest’s events. Together, over HK25.3 million was raised. HSBC, another staunch partner of the Chest, won the Second Top Donor title. Last year, donations made by The Hongkong Bank Foundation in support of the Chest’s education-related projects to nurture an all-round young generation, and staff participation in various Chest’s events amounted to over HK$10 million. Their generous investment in community development has set an excellent corporate citizenship model.  Cheung Kong Group, the Third Top Donor, has also been widely known for their dedicated contributions in the local community. In addition to motivating their staff to care for the needy, the Group also supported The Community Chest “Cheung Kong” Rainbow Fund to help people in financial crisis. Sun Hung Kai Properties Group, MTR Corporation, Hang Seng Bank, Dr Stanley Ho, GBM, GBS, The Wharf (Holdings) Limited, Jardine Matheson Limited and Guoco Group Limited were awarded the Fourth to Tenth Top Donors respectively for their outstanding contributions.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club was presented the “Partner in Charity Award” for their generous annual grant of the Chest’s administrative expenses which enabled us to allocate all donations, without any deductions, to our 148 member agencies in helping the many needy and disadvantaged in Hong Kong.

“The Community Chest Award for Outstanding Service” was presented to The Chinese General Chamber of Commerce. The Organisation held “CGCC Charity Walk in Celebration of the PRC’s 60th Anniversary” and raised HK$10 million for the Chest.

With the stringent support from various government departments, the Chest was able to spread the message of charity across the city. This year, the Top Donor (Civil Service Category) went to Home Affairs Department who has helped the Chest strengthen its fund-raising networks in every district to channel much-needed resources back to the society.  Education Bureau, who has played a major role in promoting “Greening for the Chest” among all secondary and primary schools in Hong Kong, was awarded the Second Top Donor of this category.

The Top Donor of the Year (Home Affairs District Category) title went to Wong Tai Sin District for their generous contribution towards the worthy causes supported by the Chest. Kowloon City District and Central and Western District took away the Second and Third Top Donor titles respectively.

In view of the increasing demand in quality social welfare services, the Chest decided to increase its baseline allocation by five percent to strengthen its member agencies’ operations. In addition, the Chest will subvent three Major New Initiatives:
-             “The 3G Barrier Free Interactive Video Support Hotline Service” for the Hearing Impaired;
-             “A Project for the Prevention and Treatment of Sexual Trauma of Youngsters” – reaching out to young people online to help them develop a set of decent values regarding sex, love, passion and money; and
-             “The First Horticultural Therapy Garden in Urban Area of Kwun Tong” – promoting the healing force of nature, especially for the elderly suffering from dementia and people with depression.

During the Ceremony, Mrs Margaret Leung, JP, Campaign Committee Chairman extended her gratitude to all supporters of the Chest. She also stated that, “The Chest has a wide remit covering a full range of community services. With our administrative costs covered by endowment funds and support from The Hong Kong Jockey Club, the Chest is able to allocate 100 per cent of your contributions to enhance services and projects for the needy, most of which have no other means of funding, and to supplement areas not covered by Government subsidies. This is why donating to the Chest is the most efficient and effective way of directing resources where it will do the most good. Although the Chest has enjoyed a unique position in our community, we cannot afford to rest on our laurels. In face of the challenges ahead, the Chest will further strengthen our bonds with donors, member agencies and the public to truly become Hong Kong’s Charity of Choice.”
