The Community Chest Says Thank-you To Hong Kong At 50th Anniversary Party
2018-11-07
‘We want to thank the people of Hong Kong for their generosity and trust in us since our founding 50 years ago’, this was the key message from The Community Chest of Hong Kong Executive Committee Chairman Mr Peter Wong, JP, as he celebrated with the public the charity’s 50th birthday at a ceremony – Sharing Hearts of Gold – at Statue Square in Central today (8 November).

Joining Mr Peter Wong was President Mr Charles Lee, GBM, JP and other senior members: Mr Leon Lai, BBS, MH, Vice Patron; Dr Simon Kwok, SBS, JP, Campaign Committee Chairman; Dr Dennis Sun, BBS, JP, 50th Anniversary Organising Committee Chairman; Dr Samson Sun, DCSc, MBE, JP, Founding Chairman; Mrs Irene Yau, ISO, Public Relations Committee Chairman; Mr Charles Yang, BBS, JP, Admissions, Budgets and Allocations Committee Chairman; Mr Billy Kong, BBS, MH, JP, Executive Committee Deputy Chairman Dr John Chan, GBS, JP, Campaign Committee Co-Chairman; and Mr Frank Lyn, Treasurer.

They were there to show their gratitude for public support since the Chest was founded in 1968, one indication of which was the amount of donations received – from HK$6.8 million donations received in its first year of operation to an accumulative figure of over HK$6.8 billion by 2017/2018. As a result, The Community Chest has been able to fund services provided by 161 welfare agencies to benefit two million beneficiaries, an impressive growth from 43 agencies and under one million service users in 1968.

As a token of appreciation and a symbolic sharing of good fortune, chocolate gold-coins were handed out to members of the public at the ceremony and on buses going around 18 locations in Hong Kong, Kowloon and the New Territories. Birthday parties at 126 service agencies were much enjoyed by the beneficiaries.

Line-up of 50th Anniversary Events
A number of projects have been undertaken to engage with the public throughout the Chest anniversary year, said Dr Dennis Sun. Highlights included: an open competition in March 2019 – Social Innovation in Motion – which invited tertiary students to propose new service and fund-raising ideas; and an oral-history book scheduled for publication in May 2019. The public was also invited to enjoy the anniversary theme song sang by Chest Vice Patron Mr Leon Lai and re-arranged by Mr Mark Lui, and nine anniversary videos with highlights of the core values and social services supported by the Chest.

Dr Sun also expressed great appreciation for event sponsors: Macy’s Candies Limited and Maxim's Group for their generosity. He also thanked singers Jason Chan, Mischa Ip, Cath Wong and artist Edmond Tong, for lending their support by making an appearance at the ceremony.
