Rising from the Shadows, A New Chapter Begins – A Recovery Journey of People with Mental Illness

Everyone may encounter mental health challenges at some point in life, while mental health issues can easily be overlooked by oneself or family members. The Chest is dedicated to supporting people in their mental health recovery and has funded the Richmond Fellowship of Hong Kong to implement the “Vocational Assessment and Intervention Enhancement Project for People with Mental Illness.” Through this programme, professional occupational therapists use innovative methods to conduct individual assessments and tailor rehabilitation plans for service users. A comprehensive range of support, including vocational training, home-based life skills coaching, and community training, will help participants to regain independence and reintegrate into society.

In 2017, Ling Sin suffered from long-term insomnia and anxiety due to mental health challenges. Fearing stigma, she hesitated to seek help, but with her family’s support, she finally found the courage to receive treatment in hospital. She was diagnosed with schizophrenia in end 2018. Encouraged by her social worker after discharged from hospital, Ling Sin joined the occupational therapy day training programme at the Richmond Fellowship of Hong Kong ALOHA (Eastern) Centre, where she learned handicrafts, cooking, and clerical skills. These activities helped her improve teamwork, emotional management, and job readiness. She was later referred to New Jade Manufacturing Centre for more specialised vocational rehabilitation services.

With the support of the Chest, Ling Sin has been able to participate in a variety of services along her recovery journey. Through participating in the “Recovering Citizenship” group, stress management activities, and mental and physical wellness programmes, Ling Sin has learned to manage her emotions and gain deeper self-understanding. In the “Valued Role Project,” she had the opportunity to make soups for fellow members and share her secret recipes, while creative crafts helped her relieve stress, discover new interests, and rebuild confidence. Ling Sin is deeply grateful for the support of the Chest, which has enabled her to regain meaning and hope in life.

The Community Chest remains committed to providing comprehensive mental health support for those in need, helping them to regain confidence and embrace a new life.
