Physical Disability is No Barrier to Pursuing a Dream

Despite being born with a physical disability, Wing Fat grew up with a keen interest in clerical work and dreamed of becoming a clerk. However, after graduation, he found it extremely difficult to get a job. Some interviewers tactfully suggested that their working environments were not suitable for him, while others stated outright that they would not consider hiring people with disabilities. These repeated rejections not only undermined Wing Fat’s self-confidence but also led him to question his own abilities.

Just as he was on the verge of giving up his job search, Wing Fat learned about the Vocational Training Programme organised by Hong Kong Rehabilitation Power, with funding support from the Community Chest. Holding on to a final glimmer of hope, he decided to enrol in the programme.

Through the programme, Wing Fat gained valuable skills and experience. The trainers patiently taught him practical workplace skills and guided him in overcoming challenges he might encounter on the job. He learned how to articulate his strengths and, more importantly, how to rebuild his self-confidence. Beyond training, the organisation also arranged meaningful internship opportunities. Although the journey was not without difficulties, Wing Fat felt a strong sense of fulfilment upon completing his tasks. “The programme boosted my self-confidence and gave me a great sense of accomplishment,” he said.

Following the training and internship, Wing Fat resumed his job search. This time, his abilities and perseverance impressed prospective employers, and he successfully secured a position as a clerical assistant. Today, he approaches his work with passion and dedication— a living testament that physical limitations need not stand in the way of pursuing one’s dreams.

The Chest remains committed to supporting people with disabilities in navigating all aspects of life. With determination, perseverance and access to appropriate training and support, everyone can realise their potential and shine in their own way.
