With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and a depressed economy, the Community Chest continued to face significant headwinds in the 2021/2022 campaign year. Thanks to the tremendous generosity of individual and corporate supporters, the Chest was able to raise nearly $278 million to support social services provided by 168 member agencies and designated funds set up for special purposes.
At the Annual Awards Ceremony held at Government House on Friday, 21 October 2022, the Chest recognised major corporate donors and individuals for their generous contributions. “Since day one, the Chest has been known as an organisation that moves with the times and addresses pressing needs in society proactively, innovatively and collaboratively. Rain or shine, the Chest stands ready to send in the cavalry and give the vulnerable a lift,” Mr Charles Lee, the Chest’s 2021/2022 President, said.
Mrs Janet Lee, President of the Chest, officiated at the event and presented awards to the Top Ten Donors and major donors in four special award categories.
The Top Donor, The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited, is an iconic institution in the city. Thanks to the bank and The Hongkong Bank Foundation’s unwavering support, including matching donations, special initiatives and staff participation in many Chest events, timely and pertinent assistance can be provided to more people in need.
The Second Top Donor, The Wharf Group, has a long-standing ethos of good corporate citizenship supporting the vulnerable and giving back to society. Major shopping centres managed by the awardee have been staunch supporters of Dress Casual Day over the years. In early 2022, it gave a significant boost to the Community Chest Rainbow Fund and Pandemic Rainbow Fund to support those affected by the fifth COVID wave.
The Third Top Donor, Cheung Kong Group, is widely acclaimed for its generosity in philanthropy. The Chest is blessed to have its strong support all these years, especially the dollar-for-dollar matching scheme for the annual TV show hotlines. This enabled the Chest to scale up the impact of donations made by the public and raise a good amount of funds for the Pandemic Rainbow Fund.
The Fourth to Tenth Top Donor Awards were presented to Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited, The S.H. Ho Foundation Limited, Hang Seng Bank, Mr Cheng Hsu Shih and Mrs Cheng Kwee Moei Hong Mary, Kong Yiu Man Charitable Foundation Limited, Microware Limited and Kerry Group, respectively.
The Benefactor of the Year Award went to Tencent Charity Foundation, whereas The Hong Kong Jockey Club was recognised with the Partner in Charity Award. In addition, HKEX Foundation and Caritas Hong Kong were presented with the Partner of Charity Giving Award and The Community Chest Award for Outstanding Service, respectively
2021/2022 Executive Committee Chairman Dr Simon Kwok and 2021/2022 Campaign Committee Chairman Mr Donald Lam expressed the Chest’s appreciation for the generosity of other donors and presented them with Awards of Excellence, Awards of Distinction and Awards of Merit.
