The Community Chest Continues to Address Imminent Social Needs as it Marks the 55th Milestone Anniversary
2024-06-18

Rooted in Hong Kong for more than half a century, the Community Chest has stayed true to its founding vision of gathering resources to help the less fortunate in our community. The 2023/24 campaign year was challenging, thanks to the staunch support of donors and corporate partners, the Chest raised over HK$220 million, 4% above the original fundraising target.

The donations raised enable the Chest to fulfill its funding pledges to 168 member agencies. Nearly HK$266 million has been allocated in the 2024/2025 year to fund various social welfare services, initiatives and special funds with designated purposes. The shortfall between the allocations and donations raised would be drawn from the Chest’s donation reserve to ensure uninterrupted services to the community.

At the 55th Annual General Meeting held on 17 June, Mrs Janet Lee, President of the Chest said, “The Community Chest serves as a platform bringing together resources from all walks of life to manifest the Hong Kong people’s spirit of philanthropy.”

Launched in 2022, The Community Chest Medical Assistance Fund aims to fill the service gaps for target individuals who are not eligible to receive assistance from the existing public and private medical assistance schemes. Subsequent to the support for five groups of target patients in Phase 1 and Phase 2, Phase 3 rolled out in 2024/2025 to target underprivileged dementia patients in getting timely diagnosis and treatment.

In terms of special initiatives, HK$8.6 million has been set aside for four Social Innovation Fund projects to offer preterm babies and parental support, assistance for caregivers, support for children bereavement and utilizing biomechanics and artificial intelligence for child pre-writing.

Sixteen members were elected to the 2024/2025 Board of Directors (see backgrounder for details) at the AGM. Also, the Chest thanked the thirteen retiring Board members, Mrs Laura Cha,The Hon Bernard Charnwut Chan, Dr John C C Chan, Ms Chiu Wing Kwan, Winnie, Dr David J Harilela, Ms Mary Huen, Dr Jacob Kam Chak-pui, Mr Simon Man, Mr Peter H Pang, Mr Pong Kin Yee, Paulo, Mr Raymond Tam Chi-yuen, Mr Stan Tang and Mr Wong Ting-chung, for their invaluable contributions.
