Community Chest Recognises Major Donors For Their Exceptional Generosity Amid Extraordinary Year
2021-10-07
With COVID-19 and a stressed economy, the 2020/2021 campaign year was particularly challenging. Yet, thanks to the exceptional generosity of Hongkongers, The Community Chest of Hong Kong (the Chest) was able to raise nearly $325 million to support social services provided by 165 member agencies and designated funds set up for special purposes.

At the Annual Awards Ceremony held at Government House on Wednesday, 29 September 2021, the Chest paid tribute to major corporate donors and individuals for their generous contributions. “For over half a century, the Chest has been blessed with steadfast support of Hong Kong people from all walks of life. As one of Hong Kong’s most trusted charities, the Chest proactively addresses imminent needs in society through quality, innovative and effective social services funded by public donations,” Mr Charles Lee, President of the Chest, said.

Mrs Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, officiated at the event and presented awards to the Top Ten Donors and major donors in five special award categories.

For over half a century, the Chest has been fortunate to have the steadfast support of the Top Donor, The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited, and its charitable foundation. Thanks to their generous sponsorships, matching donations, special initiatives and staff participation in many Chest events, timely and suitable assistance can be provided to more people in need.

The Second Top Donor, The Wharf Group, has a long-standing ethos of caring for others and supporting the disadvantaged in society. In particular, this awardee is a long-term supporter of the Chest’s Corporate and Employee Contribution Programme, and in 2020/2021 the company made one of the largest corporate contributions to support the Anti-Coronavirus Rainbow Fund.

The Third Top Donor, Cheung Kong Group, is no stranger to philanthropy, as the awardee is well-known for its generosity in charitable giving. The Chest is blessed to have its strong support all these years, especially the dollar-for-dollar matching scheme for our annual TV show hotline. This scheme helped the Chest to raise a good amount of funds for the Anti-Coronavirus Rainbow Fund in the last campaign year.

The Fourth to Tenth Top Donor Awards were presented to Hang Seng Bank, Microware Limited, The S.H. Ho Foundation Limited, The Wang Family Fund, Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited, MTR Corporation and Kerry Group, respectively.

The Community Chest Award for Outstanding Service went to KPMG, whereas The Hong Kong Jockey Club was recognised with the Partner in Charity Award. In addition, HKEX Foundation was recognised with both the Partner in Charity Giving Award and the Benefactor of the Year Award, and Ant Group was also presented with the Benefactor of the Year Award.

The 2020/2021 Executive Committee Chairman, Dr Simon Kwok, and Campaign Committee Chairman Dr John Chan expressed the Chest’s appreciation for the generosity of other donors and presented them with Awards of Excellence, Awards of Distinction and Awards of Merit.

The Stock Code for Charity Scheme, a fundraising programme by Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Ltd. (HKEX), has attracted the participation of over 1,200 companies and has been a major source of donation income for the Chest. Since its inception in 1999, over $1.2 billion has been raised. In recognition of this enterprising initiative, the Partner of Charity Giving Award and the Benefactor of the Year Award were presented to HKEX Foundation.

The Hong Kong Jockey Club, the recipient of the Partner in Charity Award, contributes annually to defray the Chest’s administration expenses so that the Chest is able to adhere to its pledge that 100% of funds raised are allocated to support social services offered by 165 member agencies.
